In Gerald
Graff’s essay, “Hidden Intellectualism”, he suggested a new approach about the
teaching in America’s education system. His essay begins by differentiating
between those who are street smart and those who are more academically smart.

He continues by addressing the current generation in America whereby people
have more interest in cars, sports and hip-hop music as well as how this relates
to their intellectual abilities. He also discusses the problems the American
education system is facing due to the lack of flexibility in regulations. His
essay is more of a personal story that persuade to improve America’s academic
procedures. When referring to intellectualism, being street smart is just as
important as being book smart. I do believe that if street smart were used as a
way for me to learn new languages and integrate within a new educational
system, I would have had a greater learning experience.
