Opiates
are natural opioids, which are similar to
opium. People get addicted to opiate pain killers because
they cause the feeling of euphoria, also known as the “high” users get when misusing
the painkillers.  They work by blocking
the brain’s perception of pain by binding to a pain receptor, which decreases
the feeling of pain and increases the feeling of relaxation. Changes in the
brain chemical changes and eventually do kill brain cells, specifically negatively
effecting cognitive skills and memory. Methadone
clinics
use methadone to treat withdrawal
symptoms in opiate users. Correct treatment and medicine can sometimes reverse
the negative changes in the brain.
